- What is Yoga?
Yoga is means 'Union' the union and bringing together of a balance within the physical body, the mind and the spirit/soul/Self.
It originated in India and dates back to around 3000 years BC or even earlier.Yoga is becoming increasingly popular in one's day to day living to seek a balance within the individual in this ever increasingly stressful world that we create ourselves or is a state of mind or circumstance that we find ourselves in.
The essence of Yoga is to keep the body, mind and spirit in a healthy state. It does this through a variety of ways through Pranayama - yogic breathing, Yoga postures - Asanas relaxation, and focusing the mind - concentration and contemplative meditation. The culmination of these leads to a sense of well being and bringing balance and harmony to the Individual - the Self.It is a safe regenerative form of exercise which builds a firm foundation of health .. Practice leads to a new Self Awareness, self-esteem, self-confidence, increase in vitality, energy and increased focus and concentration.
Through attending regular classes, workshops and daily practise the Yoga Student can attain a sense of inner resolve inner contentment calm and balance and harmony in the mind body and soul.- Back to top

- Is Yoga suitable for me?
- Anyone can practise Yoga regardless of age or ability. Yoga is for everyone, whatever your ability. There are always ways and means to modify a posture to suit the individual.

- What are the benefits of yoga?
Those who practise yoga benefit from increased flexibility, stamina, self confidence and strength - the most important aspect is an increased Self - awareness in both body and mind and spirit.
Students have remarked on how well they sleep after Yoga, how they regain calmness during stressful situations through the breathing practices and how they have changed their attitude to a more positive state in this ever increasing stress and demanding world that we live in.

- What should I bring along to a class and what should I wear?
You will need to bring with you an yoga mat and a blanket. If you do not have a mat, you can borrow one to begin with. I also have mats and blocks for sale. at a discount to Sanctuary clients and students.
REMEMBER
- Wear comfortable loose non-restrictive clothing.
- Bare feet is safest - less chance of slipping.
- Listen to your body. Do NOT overstrain.
- Relax in the postures. Do NOT overstretch.
- Always breathe through your nose unless instructed differently.
- Appreciate that your performance may vary and a posture which you find easy one day may seem more difficult the next.
- Yoga exercises should not be performed soon after eating. Allow 3 to 4 hours after a main meal or 1 or 2 hours after a snack. Liquids should be drunk before and after your practise not during.
- Relax between postures.
- Inform the teacher of any physical/emotional problems which may affect your practice, including pregnancy.
- You are responsible for your own body. Yoga is non competitive, we are all different and therefore it is for you to enjoy.
